SGC Exteriors, The Conservation Foundation Partner in Rain Barrel Program

Lombard, IL—SGC Exteriors (also Seamless Gutter Corp.) and the Naperville-based nonprofit The Conservation Foundation have teamed-up to make rain barrels available to area residents. The rain barrels come in two sizes—a 75-gallon capacity model with an integrated planter and a 55-gallon recycled food grade barrel—and will be sold through SGC Exteriors and labeled with The Conservation Foundation logo. The rain barrels come in different colors, depending on type, ranging from sandstone and terra cotta for the 75 gallon, to black and brick for the 55 gallon.

The partnership comes as SGC Exteriors, located at 601 E. St. Charles Road in Lombard, is looking to become a “greener” company and The Conservation Foundation has been trying to reach out to residents in the area.

“Our rain barrel program is a natural extension of our exteriors and guttering business,” said SGC Exteriors’ General Manager, Brian Carter. “We’ve been serving our community since 1963 based on the feedback our customers give us, and one thing that we’ve been asked again and again is ‘do you sell rain barrels?’ Now, by partnering with The Conservation Foundation, we can help with that organization’s important mission, as well as to continue to provide our customers with the products and services they want,” he said.

The rain barrels are compliant with all local ordinances, and come with fine screens to keep mosquitoes out, garden hose-friendly spigots to allow for easy water usage and simple installation instructions. According to The Conservation Foundation, “a quarter-inch of rain falling on the average home yields over 200 gallons of water. Using this rain as a resource through rain barrels can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams and will help reduce flooding.”

“I have received several calls from Lombard residents who are interested in rain barrels, but are reluctant to drive to south Naperville,” said The Conservation Foundation’s Land Preservation Specialist, Jim Kleinwachter. “They know that rain barrels are an easy way to collect precious rain, and that the water is great for your plants, will save you money, and is one of many ways to help the environment. We’re very pleased that we can now reach these residents through our partnership with SGC Exteriors,” he said.

SGC Exteriors will also provide information regarding The Conservation Foundation’s “Conservation@Home” program “that encourages and recognizes property owners who protect and/or create yards that are environmentally friendly and conserve water.”

“Because we are in the business of helping our customers deal with water issues through their guttering systems, finding ways for them to save money through conservation efforts not only helps them on various levels, but benefits the community’s ecosystem as a whole,” Carter said.

Gutter genius

Carter an expert on essentials
By Kelly Hardy
For Suburban Life Publications

Since 1963, Bob Carter Sr. of Elmhurst has paved the way in the home improvement business.

Carter, an innovator, has established himself as being on the leading edge of the gutter, siding, window, door and trim business. He is the owner and operator of Seamless Gutter Corporation, located in Lombard, and has developed his own style of hanging gutter systems.

Carter’s vision began with his corporate namesake, Seamless Gutters.

“We started rolling our aluminum with a big old roll form machine. This way, there was no seam in the gutter,” he said.

A seamless gutter is advantageous because on galvanized iron gutters rusting can occur along the seam and on aluminum gutters, expansion and contraction along the seam can lead to leakage.

Then, Carter, seeing the problems associated with hanging gutters with a spike and ferrule, came up with the concept for a gutter bracket. The spike and ferrule, which Seamless Gutter Corporation had been using to attach a gutter to a home, lead to design and cosmetic problems with the gutter system.

“The spike is essentially a big nail going through the aluminum. When there is water in a gutter and it freezes, the nail gets backed out. After this happens in 10-15 freeze cycles a year, the gutter is not straight up and down on the front of the house anymore. Our gutter bracket keeps the architectural lines [of the house] straight,” Carter explained.

Seamless Gutter Corporation has had a design bracket patent on their gutter bracket since 1984.

“It is actually a patent on the rib. This was the first bracket to have a rib down the center. We now have several brackets, in different sizes, under the design patent. We also put a trademark on the word “jumbo.” That means that “jumbo can’t be used [in conjunction] with anything else in building products,” Carter says.

In fact, it has been the jumbo fascia bracket that has helped Seamless Gutter make its name. The jumbo fascia bracket is five inches wide, with the patented rib down the center.

“Ice is at 10,000 bounds per square inch, and our bracket can hold 32,000-36,000 pounds per square inch. The bracket can also support a load of over 200 pounds per linear foot without bending. And, the best part is that the bracket is hidden by fastening at the rear of the gutter,” Carter said.

The gutter bracket is installed by screwing it into the exterior wall of the home, or the fascia board. The bracket, being inside the gutter, is concealed, thus eliminating any color matching needs.

Carter started his company in 1963 out of the garage of his home in Elmhurst. At that time, he was a one-man crew, doing all the design and installation. Over time, as Carter’s business grew, he needed to hire employees.

Seamless Gutter Corporation sells direct to the public and to building wholesalers. The company manufactures gutter system products like endcaps, outlet cups, downspout elbows and miters.
